Pixel 11 Pro XL vs Galaxy S26 Ultra at the same $1,299: the Ultra gives you more hardware (faster chip, S Pen, anti-reflective screen, pro video, DeX), but the Pixel wins on software, selfies, photo consistency, and a Tensor G6 that finally runs cool.

Pixel 11 Pro XL vs S26 Ultra: Same Price, Not Even Close!

Google created a bit of a problem for itself this year. At $1,299 in the US, the brand-new Pixel 11 Pro XL now costs basically the exact same as the Galaxy S26 Ultra — which has already been out for five months. So the question is simple: if you have this much to spend on an Android phone, do you buy the new Pixel or Samsung's Ultra? There's been a lot of hate around the Pixel 11 series, especially on performance and the price hike, but it's not that simple — I've genuinely enjoyed using this phone. The catch is that at this price, Google doesn't get the "it's cheaper" excuse anymore.


Quick Verdict

For the same money, the S26 Ultra objectively gives you more: a faster processor, better gaming, an S Pen, a privacy display, a much better anti-reflective screen, more camera hardware, DeX, and far more professional video flexibility. For most people at an identical price, that's the one to buy — and it gets easier once Samsung discounts it. But here's the twist: if you asked which I'd personally put in my pocket, I'd grab the Pixel. The software, the feel, the photo processing, the little AI features, and a Tensor G6 that finally runs cool and efficient make it the more enjoyable phone. Samsung gives you more; the Pixel makes me enjoy using it more.


Design and Display

The Pixel still very much looks like a Pixel — dimensions basically unchanged from last year. Google removed the temperature sensor (never used it, no loss) and replaced it with Highlight, a little light on the back that glows for things like a call from a specific contact or when you're using Gemini. I understand the ambient-AI vision, but I forgot it existed during my review because I almost never put my phone face-down. Still, I think Pixels are some of the best-looking Android phones — the camera bar, the two-tone look, and rounded edges make it really comfortable. The S26 Ultra is beautiful too, but bigger and wider to fit the S Pen, and the Pixel feels nicer in my hand.

The displays are close — 6.8 inches on the Pixel vs 6.9 on the Ultra — but Samsung has one feature I want every flagship to copy: the anti-reflective coating. Sit under a light and there's no giant reflection staring back; the Pixel reflects like crazy, and going back to a glossy panel is surprisingly annoying once you're used to Samsung's. Google technically wins brightness (3,600 nits vs 2,600), so HDR pops a bit more. Samsung also has a privacy display to stop people beside you from seeing your screen — useful on transit or planes. Both panels are excellent; Samsung is more vivid and contrasty, the Pixel more restrained.


Front Camera, Face Unlock, and the S Pen

One clear Pixel win is the front camera: a 42MP autofocus selfie vs 12MP on the Galaxy. Selfies just look better — better skin color, more detail, less pale — where the Galaxy occasionally comes out slightly soft. The Pixel's front camera is also wider. Face unlock is more useful on the Pixel too — Google's system is secure enough to authenticate inside supported apps and approve purchases, while Samsung's is more of a general unlock — though it's still nowhere near Apple's Face ID in a truly dark room. And the single easiest reason to buy the Ultra: the S Pen. If you use one, the rest of this conversation doesn't matter, because the Pixel doesn't have it.


Software: The Pixel's Biggest Strength

Pixel software just feels nice — and to be clear, this isn't stock Android, it's Pixel OS, Google's interpretation of it. The animations, typography, notifications, Material Design, and quick settings all feel cohesive. It's my favorite Android experience right now (Nothing OS is close). One UI is fantastic too, but it feels more like a power-user OS — Samsung gives you everything, sometimes literally twice (its version of an app and Google's). You can clean that up, and I always customize my Samsung phones heavily, but the Pixel is cleaner out of the box. Samsung's advantage is depth: if there's some obscure feature you want, it's probably buried in One UI — DeX is the perfect example, turning your phone into a desktop on a monitor, which the Pixel can't do.

One Pixel feature I've used constantly is Gboard Rambler: hit the enhanced mic button and just talk — ramble, say "um" fifteen times, change your mind mid-sentence — and instead of transcribing every word, it cleans it up and reorganizes your thoughts into something coherent, right inside the keyboard. It's basically what Whisper Flow does, baked into the OS.


Performance: The Controversial Part

Yes, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 5 in the S26 Ultra is significantly faster — roughly 25% faster single-core and 50% faster multi-core in my testing. At $1,300, it's completely fair to criticize Google for that. But in normal use, I can't feel the difference. Gaming is the exception: get the Samsung — better, more consistent frame rates and more GPU headroom, where the Pixel had occasional dropped frames (everything's playable, just not as smooth).

Where Google earns credit is efficiency. This is the coolest-running Tensor phone I've ever used — hammering it during setup got it warm, not roasting, which is a meaningful change if you've used older Tensors. In stress testing, Samsung produced higher performance, but the Pixel maintained its performance beautifully across loops with excellent battery drain and a higher stability score overall. So the Tensor G6 creates a weird argument: it's not remotely the fastest, but Google clearly prioritized efficiency and consistency, which is probably right for most people — even if enthusiasts are allowed to ask why they're getting this much less performance for the same price. Google also switched the modem from Qualcomm to MediaTek this generation, and despite Pixel's history of connectivity complaints, I've had no problems — calls, battery drain, and reception have all been on par with my S26 Ultra.


Cameras

On hardware, you'd expect Samsung to destroy the Pixel: a 200MP main, 50MP ultrawide, dedicated 10MP 3×, and 50MP 5× telephoto versus the Pixel's 50MP main, 48MP ultrawide, and single 48MP 5× telephoto. But for stills, I'm choosing the Pixel — not because Samsung takes bad photos (they're fantastic), but because the Pixel is more consistent. Samsung loves making photos pop (greener greens, bluer blues, lifted shadows), which many will prefer, but it sometimes overdoes it — skies pushed so hard that areas around trees look overprocessed. The Pixel is comfortable leaving a shadow as a shadow. Both ultrawides are great, and the Pixel goes a little wider.

Zoom is more interesting: Samsung wins around 3× (it has a dedicated camera; the Pixel crops), both have real 5× hardware, and by 10× the Pixel was surprisingly competitive — I often preferred Google's detail — going up to 120× digital versus Samsung's 100×. Night is much closer; both are great, Samsung brightens more aggressively (sometimes great, sometimes shifting colors away from reality), while the Pixel looks more natural — though Samsung handled bright light sources better at times. Notably, Night Sight feels much faster on the Pixel this year despite the slower chip.

Video flips it around — for video I still trust the Galaxy more. The Pixel has improved a lot, but Samsung was more consistent across everything I shot (the Pixel's slow-motion looked softer and noisier). And for creators, Samsung's advantage is real: Google added great conveniences — a built-in teleprompter, grid lines, an audio meter — but Samsung gives proper pro video control, including APV Log and higher-quality 4:2:2 files you can actually grade afterward. The Pixel records 10-bit HDR and HEVC, but not that.


Battery and Charging

Google slightly reduced the battery this year (now ~5,150mAh), but in real use I've gotten better battery life — easily a full day, sometimes ending at 50–60% on lighter days with ~3 hours of screen time. The S26 Ultra is also excellent; both are genuine all-day phones, with maybe a slight edge to the Pixel, but close enough that battery wouldn't decide it. Samsung wins wired charging (60W vs 45W); wireless is the same 25W Qi2. But the Pixel has one nice convenience — Pixel Snap, Google's MagSafe-style magnets built in, so you don't need a case to attach accessories.


Who Should Buy Which?

  • Buy the Galaxy S26 Ultra if you want the most for your money at the same price — a faster processor, better gaming, the S Pen, a privacy display, a better anti-reflective screen, more camera hardware, DeX, and pro video flexibility. And it's an even easier call once Samsung discounts it.
  • Buy the Pixel 11 Pro XL if, like me, you value the experience — the best-feeling Android software, a design you enjoy holding, more consistent photo processing, Google's AI touches, and a Tensor that finally runs cool and efficient.

Samsung gives you more. The Pixel makes me enjoy using the phone more — and for a lot of people, that's ultimately the choice.
